Temporary traffic shifts on Douglas Pike (Route 7) and nighttime intermittent lane closures on I-295
What is happening?
Beginning February 27, 2026, RIDOT will temporarily modify traffic patterns on Douglas Pike (Route 7) and I-295 in Smithfield, Rhode Island to facilitate replacement of the bridge carrying Douglas Pike over I-295. Douglas Pike will remain open in both directions but be reduced to two lanes in each direction where it passes above the Interstate. Nighttime work will also affect travel lanes and shoulders on I295 beneath Douglas Pike.
How will this affect you?
February 27 – April 23
During demolition and replacement, the northbound side of the Douglas Pike bridge will be closed. Staged construction will be used to maintain two lanes each in both directions on what is normally the southbound side of the structure (see figure above). All access and ramp connections in both directions will remain open. Motorists should reduce speed, exercise caution and observe directions from police details or construction personnel while traversing the work zone.
March 20 – May 13
The shoulder on I-295 beneath Douglas Pike will be closed, and intermittent nighttime (7 P.M. – 5 A.M.) lane closures are expected. During these times, anticipate rolling roadblocks (periods of extreme reductions in traffic speeds under police control) on I-295 to support replacement activities.
April 24 – May 13
During demolition and replacement, the southbound side of the Douglas Pike bridge will be closed. Staged construction will be used to maintain two lanes each in both directions on what will be the newly constructed northbound side of the structure (see figure above). All access and ramp connections in both directions will remain open. Motorists should reduce speed, exercise caution and observe directions from police details or construction personnel while traversing the work zone.
Expect delays while traveling through the work zone, and drivers are urged to follow all posted signage and police direction to help ensure the safety of both motorists and construction crews. During nighttime operations (7 P.M. – 5 A.M.), anticipate rolling roadblocks (periods of extreme reductions in traffic speeds under police control) on I-295 to support replacement activities. The Douglas Pike bridge replacement is anticipated to be completed by mid-May, at which time all traffic will return to its normal configuration, providing a safer and more reliable crossing.
