May is Building Safety Month

Post Date:04/28/2026 11:52 AM

The Town of Smithfield is proud to recognize May 2026 as Building Safety Month, joining communities across the country in promoting the importance of safe, resilient, and sustainable construction.

This year’s theme, “Built to Last,” highlights the critical role that building safety plays in protecting our homes, businesses, and infrastructure—ensuring they stand strong for generations to come.

Building safety is made possible through the dedication of professionals including building officials, fire prevention officers, engineers, architects, contractors, and tradespeople. Their work ensures that our community is protected through the enforcement of modern building codes and safety standards.

Throughout the month, Building Safety Month will focus on key topics each week:

  • Week 1: Safe Homes, Strong Communities
  • Week 2: Voices of the Built Environment
  • Week 3: Prepared to Protect
  • Week 4: Communities Without Limits

These themes emphasize the importance of safety, resilience, and innovation in the built environment, as well as the people who make it all possible.

On March 17, 2026, the Smithfield Town Council officially proclaimed May as Building Safety Month, reinforcing the Town’s commitment to public safety and community resilience. A copy of the proclamation is available here - Proclamation Building Safety Month - May 2026

We encourage all residents to take time this month to learn more about building safety, preparedness, and the important role we all play in maintaining a safe community.
