In memory of retired Town Manager Dennis Finlay (1948 – 2026)

I write this in memory of a good friend and great boss that I had the pleasure to work for. We remember Dennis as a life beautifully lived, a life defined by purpose, and a life given away in service to others. We honor Dennis Finlay—a devoted family man, a cherished friend, and a pillar of Smithfield, Rhode Island.
To be a public servant is a high calling. It requires a rare blend of humility, patience, and enduring strength. As a retired Town Manager right here in Smithfield, Dennis didn't just hold a title; he lived a vocation. He understood that leadership is not about prestige, but about stewardship. Every decision he made, every budget he balanced, and every project he oversaw was rooted in a deep love for his neighbors and a desire to make this town a better place for families to grow, live, and thrive. He looked at Smithfield not just as a map of roads and buildings, but as a community of souls.
But Dennis’s service did not end when he walked out of the town hall. His true legacy is woven into the everyday moments of kindness, the quiet wisdom he shared, and the fierce love he had for his family. He showed us that the grandest form of service is the love we offer to those closest to us.
Dennis took his talents; his sharp mind, his steady hand, his compassionate heart—and multiplied them for the benefit of everyone around him. He did not bury his gifts; he spent them generously.
Today, our hearts are heavy with the grief of his absence. The spaces he filled will feel noticeably emptier. We take comfort in knowing that Dennis has completed his earthly civic duty. He has stepped down from the cares of this world and stepped into eternal peace.
The infrastructure of a town eventually changes, but the impact of a good man's character stays forever. Dennis has left an indelible mark on Smithfield, and an even deeper mark on our hearts.
As we say our earthly goodbyes to Dennis, let us honor his memory by carrying his torch forward. Let us love our families more deeply. Let us serve our communities more selflessly. And let us live in such a way that we, too, might one day hear those beautiful words: Well done, good and faithful servant.
