Community Stormwater Management
The Town of Smithfield is responsible for operating and maintaining the municipal stormwater drainage system and complying with state and federal clean water requirements. The Community Stormwater Management Program focuses on reducing pollution carried by stormwater runoff to protect local streams, rivers, ponds, and lakes.
The six (6) core elements of a proper stormwater management program are listed below:
- Public Education & Outreach
- Public Involvement/Participation
- Illicit Discharge Detection & Elimination
- Construction Site Runoff Controls
- Post Construction Runoff Controls
- Good Housekeeping for Municipal Operations
Lastly the Town is required to monitor for Total Maximum Daily Loadings within the Woonasquatucket River Watershed.
Through the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS), the Engineering Department is able to coordinate a global community program designed at minimizing pollution to our local waterways.
