In July 2024, the Smithfield Police Department unveiled its new Mobile Command Unit, proudly nicknamed “Russ.”
The vehicle was dedicated in memory of Mechanic Russell Sturtevant, who passed away in March 2022. “Russ” served the department with distinction for 14 years before retiring in 2021. In addition to his service to Smithfield, he honorably served our nation for nearly 38 years in the United States Air Force and Air National Guard.
The Mobile Command Unit is built on a 2023 Ford F-450 chassis and features a 14-foot dry van body. Inside, it is outfitted with several desktop workstations, television monitors, docking stations, a Cradlepoint modem, and full internet and telecommunications capabilities. It also includes a small galley area for extended deployments.
Externally, the unit is equipped with a retractable awning, an outdoor TV monitor with docking stations, surveillance cameras, a dry-erase board, and an extendable camera mast. For stability during deployment, it is supported by four self-leveling, retractable legs.
The Mobile Command Unit is utilized at major community gatherings, including town parades, sporting events, and festivals, where it functions as a centralized operations hub. In times of emergency, it plays a vital role in supporting department-wide communications.
