 Mixed Recycling Guidelines

 Items Too Big For Your Trash Bin?

Bulky (trash) items and bulky (recycle) metals/appliances are collected by appointment. Appointments are based on trash and recycling calendar and on a first come, first served basis. To schedule pickup, please call (800) 972-4545. Please note, some exceptions apply.

Waste Management garbage truckOur vendor, Waste Management, has a call center for certain issues.

Please call Waste Management Call Center at (800) 972-4545 only for these specific issues:

  • Missed trash & recycling collections (regular, leaf, special appointment).
  • Driver safety issues.
  • Damages to property due to trash collection operations.
  • Bulk Collection.

Automated Trash/Recycling Collection (in place since 2013) Reminders:

  • Trash/Recycling must be in the Town provided cart(s).
  • Recycling must be out in order for trash to be collected (No bin, no barrel policy).
  • Place carts 3 feet apart from each other.
  • DO NOT place carts near any obstacles such as trees, mailboxes, telephone poles or parked cars- there must be a 4-foot distance between the carts and any obstructions.
  • Arrows on cart lid must face the street.
  • Cart lids must be closed and no material on top of the lid or spilling out of cart.
  • You are allowed to write your address on the lid label.DO NOT WRITE YOUR NAME—Trash and Recycling Carts are property of the Town.
  • Do not put lawn and yard waste in either cart. The current lawn and yard waste schedule remains in effect. Lawn and yard waste stickers are available at DPW and Town Hall to label old trash cans if you chose to re-purpose them for lawn and yard waste barrels.
  • Only recyclable items are to be deposited into carts with yellow lid.
  • DO NOT put old green or blue recycle bins in your cart. Those bins can be dropped off at DPW, 3 Spragueville Rd from 8 AM-3 PM.
  • Bulky Items are collected once per month by appointment only; call 1-800-972-4545.
  • Metal and Appliance, bulk sized items are collected once per month by appointment; call 1-800-972-4545.

Changes or delays in trash/recycling pick-up are posted on this page and a message will also be on the Recycling Coordinator’s voicemail 233-1034 ext. 205.

 Winter Storm Automated Collection Tips:

  • When snow is predicted overnight, please wait until early morning to put out your trash and recycling carts so plow trucks can efficiently clean snow during the overnight hours.
  • Please have your carts out by 6:00 AM and be sure to properly space them 3 feet apart and 4 feet from other obstacles such as snowbanks, cars, poles and mailboxes.
  • Please bring empty carts in as soon as possible to allow plow trucks complete access to roadways.
  • Updates and changes will be posted on this page and a message will be left on the Recycling Coordinator’s voicemail 233-1034 ext. 205.

Bulky Items and Metal/ Appliance Items Pick-Up Request

Bulk (trash) items and metal/appliance items are collected, by appointment, on a first come, first served basis, according to the schedule on the trash and recycling calendar.

To schedule a pick up please call our hauling company, Waste Management at 1-800-972-4545. Please note, construction debris is not accepted through the Town’s Trash and Recycling program and some exceptions apply.


Yard Waste Collection

The Town of Smithfield begins Lawn and Yard Waste pickup on the first full week of April. Yard waste is collected on residents’ regular trash day on a route separate from trash and recycling.

Yard waste must be set at curb in brown paper bags (available at local retailers) or barrels clearly labeled YARD WASTE. Yard waste in plastic garbage bags or cardboard boxes will not be collected. *A maximum of 12 barrels and/or bags of yard waste is accepted per household.

Yard waste will be collected every week April through May; every other week starting June through October, and every week through November. Please see the recycling calendar for exact dates.

Composting is a great way to reduce curbside yard waste collection requirements. Compost bins are available to residents for $45 each at Smithfield Public Works located at 3 Spragueville Road (behind Dave’s Towing Service).

Plastic Grocery Bags

Single use plastic grocery bags and (stretchy) film can be returned to local grocery stores or pharmacy; please do not put them in recycling bins or use to dispose of recyclables in recycling bins.

There should be no plastic bags or film placed in curbside recycling carts.


Cardboard

There is a cardboard recycling container at Smithfield Public Works located at 3 Spragueville Rd. Smithfield residents can bring flattened cardboard up to 5 feet in length for recycling. Drop-off is available during hours of operation: M-F 7:30 AM– 3:30PM.

 

MATTRESSES AND BOX SPRINGS

 Standard bed mattresses/box springs are not collected curbside.  Below are a few options for mattress/box spring recycling.  Please note: mattresses and box springs must be clean (minor staining is ok) and dry to be recycled for no cost.  Wet, heavily damaged or soiled mattresses/ box springs are charged a $70 per piece fee to be landfilled.

 

  • The Town offers special events at which residents can drop-off clean, dry mattresses and/ or box springs for recycling.Please contact 401-233-1034 x 205 for the next available event date and to be added to the drop-off list.Drop-off is by appointment only.Please note: mattresses and/ or box springs must be clean and dry to be accepted during the event.

     

  • Bring clean, dry mattresses and box springs to Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation, 3 Shun Pike Johnston, for recycling during their normal business hours.  They will accept up to three pieces per visit for no cost, as long as they meet the recycling standard.When you arrive be sure to tell the attendant that you have a mattress/ box spring to recycle, otherwise, you will be charged the $70 per piece fee for landfilling.They require fluorescent yellow safety vest/shirts on site.If you do not have one, they are available for purchase (currently listed as $1-$5 on their website).

  • Contact, Ace Mattress Recycling, 401-615-9619 or 401-640-2725 to arrange a drop-off for a fee or a pick-up for a fee.

     

  • Contact Diana from BP Express at 401-400-1658.They will pick up mattresses starting at $25 per piece. You can schedule pickups directly with her.
