Current Projects
Water Service Field Location GPS Mapping:
The SWSB recently completed the GPS service location project. These water service shut offs were the last component of the distribution system to collect and place in a digital mapping format. As part of this project, the data collected also included a review of all installation records and tie cards to confirm all service pipe materials contains no lead components. This was part of a program to certify to the RI Department of Health that our system is lead free.
North Providence Pressure Control Project:
The North Providence Pressure Control project is well underway with completion scheduled for summer of 2025. This project includes the installation of a short section of pipe on Cavalry Drive to complete a loop between Ridge Road and Rte.7 for system redundancy and water quality. The project also includes the installation of two pressure reducing valves to protect distribution mains in North Providence and allow for increased pumping capacity in the future.
Route 116 Water Main Greenville Water Interconnection Design:
Phase I will include the installation of a 12-inch water main extension from Appian Way along George Washington Highway, to Farnum Pike (south) to Pleasant View Avenue creating an important interconnection with the Greenville Water District’s distribution system. Ultimately, this expansion aims to create a more interconnected water supply system for both water districts customers, enhancing overall resilience, water quality and future water capacity.
Phase II involves the design and installation of 2,500 feet of 12-inch water main along Farnum Pike (Route 104), extending north from the intersection of Route 116 (George Washington Highway) to connect with the existing 12” water main near 326 Farnum Pike.
Phase III of the project will extend the water main north along Rte. 116 from Appian Way to Rte. 7, Douglas Pike. This important connection will provide critical resiliency to the overall distribution system and increase water supply for the future demands of the Economic Development Zone.
Route 7 Water Main Replacement over Rte. 295:
The RI DOT is in the process of replacing the bridges on Rte. 7 that cross over Interstate Rte. 295. An integral part of this project will include the relocation of the primary water main that services the SWSB distribution system. We are working closely with the RI DOT design team and contractor to ensure there will be no interruption in service.
Water Rate Study:
To ensure our water rates remain current with operations and revenue requirements, the SWSB reviews their rate structure every three years. The last rate study covered FY24 through FY2026. The Providence Water Supply Board (PWSB), where we purchase all of our water at a wholesale rate, is proposing to the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) an increase in the wholesale rate to be affective July of 2025. Part of this wholesale rate increase request includes creating two wholesale rates instead of one. The first would be a rate for wholesale customers who receive their water by gravity (Low service customers). The second wholesale rate would be for wholesale customers who receive their water through required pumping activities by PWS (High service customers). Smithfield Water Supply, Greenville Water District and the Lincoln Water District are the high service areas. If approved this would represent an almost 30% increase in our wholesale rates, and a decrease of almost 10% for low service customers.
